Attention NON-FAROESE CONTRIBUTERS: Indefinite article in Faroese / Kenniorð í føroyskum rætta

Hi Wikipedians

For those of you who contribute to the Faroese Wikipedia, this is very much appreciated, however, as a native Faroese speaker I must remind you, that Faroese, like Norwegian and Danish, has both indefinite and postfixed definite articles. Many seem to think that Faroese, like Icelandic, has only postfixed definite articles, this is not so. A common error I see, is that the indefinite article is left out when e.g. a town or state is mentioned in a text; I’ve made an example and traslated the Faroese meaning into English, to show you how wrong this is.

Example:

WRONG: Rituvík er bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is built on Eysturoy (Faroese meaning)

CORRECT: Rituvík er ein bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is a village on Eysturoy (Faroese meaning)

Cheers

Hey Wikipediarir

Ein feilur sum gongur aftur í greinum á Wikipedia ið eru skrivaðar av ikki-føroyingum, er at kenniorðið (artiklen) frammanfyri navnorðið verður gloymt. Nútíðar Føroyskt hevur, eins og norskt og danskt, kenniorð (artikel) frammanfyri navnorð. Eg haldi at tað livir ein mýta her á Wikipedia, at føroyskt, eins og íslendskt, ikki hevur kenniorð frammanfyri navnorð. Men hettar er skeivt.

Dømi:

WRONG: Rituvík er bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is built on Eysturoy (Føroyskur týdningur)

CORRECT: Rituvík er ein bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is a village on Eystruoy (Føroyskur týdningur)

Leyva vs Ljón vs Løva rætta

Eg koyrdi hetta fyrst undir greinina Leyvur, men eg haldi tað hoyrir heima her. So eg broyti høvuðsheitið í greinunum til 'Leyva'.

Forkláringin eg skrivaði er her:

Call for image filter referendum rætta

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Further details and educational materials will be available shortly. The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be conducted on servers hosted by a neutral third party. Referendum details, officials, voting requirements, and supporting materials will be posted at Meta:Image filter referendum shortly.

Sorry for delivering you a message in English. Please help translate the pages on the referendum on Meta and join the translators mailing list.

For eksempel hvis du vil endre i teksten «Tú hevur ikki ritað inn.

Eg veit ikki rættiliga, hvat eg skal halda um hatta. Eg fáist sjálv nógv við myndir, uploadi tær tó altíð til Commons Wikimedia, tí so nýtist man bara at uploada myndina einaferð og hon kann nýtast á øllum Wikipediunum. Myndir sum bert vera uploadaðar beinleiðis til føroysku Wikipediuna kunnu bert nýtast her, ikki so smart. Hatta viðvíkjandi upphavsrætti er rættiliga álvarsamt. Eg meini ikki, at Føroyska Wikipedian eigur at loyva, at myndir, sum bert vera loyvdar í lítlari upploysn og bert á ensku Wikipediuni eiga at vera nýttar her (og ofta í hægri upploysn enn enska Wikipedian loyvir). Vit eiga ikki at vera "The Wild West". Eg veit ikki, eg haldi ikki, at vit eiga at loyva tí. So Jørgen, eg eri ikki samd í at vit skulu lata bjørnina sova ;-) Vinarliga EileenSanda 17. okt 2011 kl. 20:11 (UTC)[reply]
Language support group for Faroese rætta

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net. Thanks, Gmeijssen 22. okt 2011 kl. 14:17 (UTC)[reply]

Terms of Use update rætta

I apologize that you are receiving this message in English. Please help translate it.

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is discussing changes to its Terms of Use. The discussion can be found at Talk:Terms of use. Everyone is invited to join in. Because the new version of Terms of use is not in final form, we are not able to present official translations of it. Volunteers are welcome to translate it, as German volunteers have done at m:Terms of use/de, but we ask that you note at the top that the translation is unofficial and may become outdated as the English version is changed. What is your Nationality? rætta

Those of you who contribute to the Faroese Wikipedia, what are your nationalities? Are there any native Faroese speakers in here? A suspicously large percentage of the Faroese articles have grammatical (and other) errors in them.

Iceland

I can see that those who contribute to the Iceland articles are definately not Faroese and refer to Icelandic Provinces as 'Vestur Ísland', 'Norður ísland' etc. This is wrong, we Faroese refer to Icelandic Provinces as 'á Vesturlandinum í Íslandi', 'á Norðurlandinum í Íslandi' etc. Another common error is the description of geo. locations as 'Norðvestur', 'Norðeystur' etc. In Faroese we use the Terms 'Útnyrðings' (Out North), 'Landnyrðings' (Land North) etc.

Eg síggi at tey ið skriva um Ísland eru ikki føroyingar og skriva 'Vestur Ísland', 'Norður Ísland' o.s.fr. hetta er ein feilur; vit føroyingar siga 'á vesturlandinum í Íslandi', 'á norðurlandinum í Íslandi' o.s.fr. Ein annar feilur er at fólk skriva 'norðvestur', 'norðeystur' o.s.fr. Vit føroyingar siga 'útnyrðings', 'landnyrðings', o.s.fr.

Tofts 7. nov 2011

Hi Tofts. I am a native Faroese Wikipedian, but I contribute most in articles regarding Faroese matters. I often look at "Seinastu broytingar" and follow throught there what other Wikipedians write, and if I find mistakes I correct them. I am glad, that Icelandic natives and other foreigners are active contributors on the Faroese Wikipedia, if they were not active, we probably wouldn't have any or very few articles about other countries, cities etc. We can't expect people from other counties to know that we call Sout Iceland "Suðurlandið" and that we have special words for the directions North-East (Landnyrðingur), South-East (landsynningur) etc. I am not even sure how to spell these directions, as I mainly use them in spoken language. I live in Suðuroy and we often talk about these wind directions, because they have great influence on how Smyril (the ferry) will behave while sailing the two hours trip to Tórshavn. We have great respect for landsynningur, that is for sure ;-) The sea can get very rough if the wind comes from the easterly directions. Anyway, I think that it is up to us native Faroese Wikipedians to correct their mistakes and to tell them about these special Faroese words, only that way they can learn it, and I can see that many of the people from other countries, who are active on the Faroese Wikipedia, really make an effort to learn our language, and I have great respect for that and admire these people :) Kind regards EileenSanda 7. nov 2011 kl. 12:07 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw an article Valdømi, which is quite poorly written regarding the Faroese language, it is actually more Icelandic than Faroese, so I can follow you in a way, Tofts. I haven't been going through many articles, but I can see that you have done a lot of small corrections here and there. It must mean, that there has not been any Faroese Wikipedians active just while these articles were written, and that is not good. But we not so many and there are very few active Faroese Wikipedians. I have been the most active lately, but earlier I was not so active. Somebody (Faroese or with very good knowledge about the Faroese language, should go through the articles regarding other countries. I am still glad that foreigners do contribute here, but there must be some Faroese people or foreigners with good knowledge to Faroese language, who correct these articles, which are written with grammatical mistakes.
I will copy the article Valdømi in here, I will try to correct it, or perhaps you will correct it Tofts. I can see a problem with this article, it is clearly written about the Icelandic meaning of the word, but the problem is that we also use the word "Valdømi" in Faroese. We had Suðuroyar, Sandoyar, Suðurstreymoyar, Norðstreymoyar, Eysturoyar, Norðoya and Vága Valdømi earlier, now we have only one "valdømi" when we have political elections. (I am sorry that this answer is so long, but this is an important issue, that you bring up Tofts.). Regards EileenSanda 7. nov 2011 kl. 12:37 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing. There is a group, which is called "Bólkur:Tjóðardeildir". What is Tjóðardeildir? I have never heard about this before??? EileenSanda 7. nov 2011 kl. 12:40 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your replies.

Yes Brúkari:JoergenB, there are some academics who insist on an archaic norse form of Faroese, which hasn't existed for the last 5 centuries. I have pointed out an important detail, that Faroese has both indefinite and postfixed definite articles. Here comes the example again:

WRONG: Rituvík er bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is built on Eysturoy (Faroese meaning)

CORRECT: Rituvík er EIN bygd í Eysturoy = Rituvík is a village on Eysturoy (Faroese meaning)

This error appears again and again.

Hey EileenSanda, ja eg kann gott hyggja eftir hasi greinini og rætta hana. Haldi onkur íslendingur 'girdi'? hevur bara copy-n-pastað íslendsku greinirnar yvir í eitt føroyskt volapyk. Síggi tú hevur rætta Suðurvaldømi, men hatta má rættast einaferð aftrat, tú skrivar 'á Suðurlandi Íslands', hvørsfall eksisterar ikki í føroyskum talumáli, og føroyingar umtala altíð Ísland sum 'landið' og brúka altíð bundna formin, 'á Suðurlandinum' og tí eigur tað at vera 'á Suðurlandinum í Íslandi'. Eisini sjálv yvirskriftin eigur sambært føroyskum málreglum at broytast til bundna formin 'Suðurvaldømið' við ð í endanum.

Cheers
