Kjak:Føroyskt mál
Faroese is a Germanic language and thus belongs to the indo-european family of languages. Though Faroese and German differ since maybe 2.000 years from common-Germanic (as we say in German: "gemeingermanisch"), we have in the core maybe 70 % similarity, especially the gender system... :-) Arne List 20:12, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

just a question
rættaA Á B D Ð E F G H I Í J K L M N O Ó P R S T U Ú V Y Ý Æ Ø. C, Q, W, X og Z
- i understand that C, Q, W, X and Z were added later. am i correct ? takk in advance for your answer ;D Alvaro 3. mai 2005 kl. 13:41 (UTC)
- Well, the letters C, Q, W, X nad Z were never actually added to the farese alphabet. But they are none the less part of the faroese keyboard layout. It is important to be able to wright usual names in foreign languages. Many people in Faroe have names with those letters as well as the danish and norwegian letter å.--Jogvanj 3. mai 2005 kl. 16:25 (UTC)
- In the Faroese Dictionary (Føroysk Orðabók 1998), we find celsius, C-vitamin, watt, x-ás (abscessus). These are the only words in Faroese starting with those letters in that very comprehensive book (70,000 entries). However, Faroese people can have names like Zacharias Heinesen, Elinborg Lützen or Niels Christopher Winther. As Jógvan said, even Å occurs in names, though it is written Á in Faroese orthography. rættaJeg har lest at "ð" uttales som den Engelske "th" lyden på Islandsk, er det det samme i Færøysk? (I have read that the letter "ð" is prenounced like the English "th" in Icelandic, is it the same in Faroese?)
- It's not the same. It can have different sounds: in deyður it sounds as a j, in góðan it sounds as a v and in tað it has no sound. ℚuackor 27. jan 2008 kl. 20:30 (UTC)
